About Us
“The ThunderTones” under its current charter has grown since 2001, although it is a successor to choruses from the 1950’s. Our affiliation with the Barbershop Harmony Society (previously known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of BarberShop Quartet Singing in America, or SPEBSQA) sets high quality standards for our performances, and establishes us as a 501-c-3 non-profit organization.
Although barbershop harmony was originally sung by quartets, today’s barbershop harmony is frequently sung by choruses as well. Our repertoire includes inspirational patriotic, and good old-fashioned American music, arranged in the classic barbershop style. Barbershop music is a blend of chords and harmonies arranged primarily for the male voice. It consists of 4 parts called the Bass, the lowest, the Lead, usually the melody, the Baritone, the middle, and the Tenor, the highest.
In addition to weekly Chapter Meetings, where our songs and skills are honed, the chorus competes in society and district competitions, produces several shows each year, performs for churches, and civic organizations, and sponsors a “Singing Valentine” program on Valentine’s Day. Annually, we offer a free concert on September 11, as tribute to 9/11 victims, servicemen and first responders.
